Artistic Statement
My artistic journey is a harmonious fusion of flute playing and body movement, an exploration of how these two instruments can intertwine to convey the depths of human emotions. Within the discipline of classical performance, I am driven to push the boundaries and expand the creative landscape, searching for innovative ways to express myself beyond the limitations of traditional stage presence.
The flute, as a standalone instrument, can be somewhat restricting when it comes to conveying body language and theatricality. However, I am captivated by the challenge of connecting these two elements without compromising the musical essence that is so important to me. Through experimentation and thinking outside the box, I have embarked on a quest to find the delicate balance between musical excellence and the expressive possibilities that arise from integrating movement.
Drawing inspiration from, for example, Butoh, the Japanese dance theatre known for its grotesque and transformative qualities, I delve into more theatrical art forms that amplify the range of emotions I aim to explore. It is my mission to unlock the depths of human experience, shedding light on feelings that are often unexplored or defy easy definition – the unease, hopelessness, grief, and instinctuality that reside within us all.
Constantly pushing boundaries and embracing the unknown, I am committed to developing my own expressive style through free improvisation. This pursuit leads me to constantly challenge myself, seeking new limits and expanding the horizons of musical expression.
In addition to my artistic practice, creative education plays a pivotal role in my mission. I strongly believe in nurturing a more open society through arts education, and to this end, I have established the Interdisciplinary Performance Workshop. In collaboration with esteemed partners such as the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles and the Crescendo Summer Institute, this workshop offers musicians of all ages and skill levels a unique hybrid course.
By integrating exercises and methodologies from theater, dance, and free improvisation, the workshop transcends traditional boundaries, allowing participants to explore their innate artistic instincts. It becomes a space where imagination knows no limits, mistakes are embraced as opportunities for growth, and the collaborative interplay between performers becomes a powerful catalyst for creative expression.
Through my work and educational initiatives, I aspire to ignite a sense of freedom and openness in individuals, fostering a society that embraces the transformative power of the arts. It is my belief that by encouraging instinctive performance, promoting reaction and connection on stage, and uncovering the hidden possibilities within our bodies and instruments, we can cultivate a more vibrant and empathetic world.
